Final Freeway: a red sports car against the clock
Final Freeway is a retro arcade road racer by OYK Games, drawn in the style of 16-bit coin-op driving games, in which you drive a red sports car down a scrolling freeway before a countdown hits zero. The About screen credits code, graphics and design to Davide Pasca and dates the game 2010 to 2019. Before each run you set four options: difficulty (Beginner, Normal or Expert), soundtrack, play mode (Standard Course, Shuffled Course or Time Attack) and the course or track. GamePix counts eight tracks with scenery ranging from desert to icy roads and ruins; the two Time Attack tracks we saw were East Coast City and American Desert. Unlike the 3D racers on What Games Play, its main menu has no garage or upgrade screen: just Play Game, High Scores, Options and About.

How to play Final Freeway
Leave the title screen alone and the game plays itself in Demo Mode. Click it to reach the menu.

Set up the run
Use the arrows to pick difficulty, soundtrack (with a Test button to preview it), play mode and course, then press Start.

Beat the countdown
A race queen line-up sees you off under a Start banner. The TIME counter begins at 90 in Time Attack and keeps falling while you drive.

Drive for distance and score
Steer with Left and Right, hold Up to accelerate and use Down to brake for the sharper bends.

Tips for Final Freeway
- Master the brake. The GamePix tip for this game is that good braking is what gets you through tight corners.
- Start on Beginner. Difficulty is set per run, so learn a course on Beginner before moving to Normal or Expert.
- Use Time Attack to practise one road. It lets you choose a single named track, such as American Desert, and repeat it.
- Keep an eye on TIME. The counter drops every second, so a slow corner costs you as much as a crash would.
- Try Shuffled Course for variety. As the name says, it mixes up the course order, so runs do not always open on the same road.

The racing HUD shows SCORE on the left, a TIME countdown next to it, SPEED in km/h, a LAP timer in minutes and seconds, and the current stage number at the bottom right. Score rose as we drove in our test: 186 at 44 km/h after seven seconds, then 1,559 by the 15-second mark. Your best runs go into the High Scores list on the main menu.
