Super Onion Boy 2: power up, find the secret paths and face the psychic monster
Super Onion Boy 2 is a 2D retro pixel-art platformer by Marcell Rocha in which Onion Boy runs and jumps through side-on levels, transforms with superpowers, and fights bosses to rescue a friend captured by a monster with psychic powers. The story picks up after the first game: having saved a princess, Onion Boy wakes up in a forest and heads back to where it happened. Coins and stars turn into extra lives, and chests hold magic potions. The game came out on Steam in August 2021; the HTML5 version embedded here followed in July 2024. Compared with Super Billy Boy, the other retro platformer on What Games Play, Onion Boy has no attack of his own: the power button only works once a transformation is available, so most of the time you are dodging, not shooting.

How to play Super Onion Boy 2
Each level is a side-on course of enemies, gaps and bosses. Transformations are Onion Boy's only way to hit back.
- 1
Open the level select
Press Play on the title screen. The level-select screen shows 15 numbered levels per page, with a green arrow on the right to page forward.
- 2
Run and jump
Move with A and D or the left and right arrow keys, and jump with Z, K or the Space bar.
- 3
Transform when you can
Once a power is available, press X or J to use it. Without a transformation the button does nothing, so pick your fights.
- 4
Collect and push on
Grab coins and stars for extra lives, open chests for magic potions, and beat each boss to move closer to the final showdown.

What sets Super Onion Boy 2 apart
Powers come from transformations
Onion Boy carries no weapon. The X / J button only works while a transformation or superpower is active, so each power-up is a short window to attack.
Coins and stars become lives
Collectibles are not just for show: gathering coins and stars earns extra lives, which you will want before the boss fights.
Bosses and a final showdown
The quest is broken up by boss fights, and GamePix's own hint is to watch each boss closely to spot its weak point before committing.
Secret paths and potion chests
Levels hide alternate routes and treasure. Chests contain magic potions, so a detour off the main path can pay off.
Tips for Super Onion Boy 2
- Save lives for boss stages. Pick up every coin and star on the way; the extra lives they give are your buffer when a boss pattern catches you out.
- Watch a boss before hitting it. Spend the first few seconds of a boss fight watching its moves to find the weak point, as the GamePix hint suggests.
- Do not waste a transformation. Powers are only usable while active, so use them on enemies that block your path rather than on ones you could jump over.
- Check off-screen ledges. Secret paths and treasure chests are part of the level design; a ledge that leads away from the obvious route is worth a look.
Who is Super Onion Boy 2 for?
Fans of 8-bit style platformers
Pixel art, side-on levels, extra lives from collectibles and boss fights follow the old console template.
Players who liked the first Super Onion Boy
The sequel continues the story right after the princess rescue from the first game.
Explorers who search every corner
Hidden paths, treasure and potion chests reward players who leave the main route.
Lives, collectibles and progress
Super Onion Boy 2 tracks progress by levels, not a points total. Coins and stars matter because they convert into extra lives; chests hold magic potions. Levels are picked from a level-select screen with 15 per page. No source we checked states the total level count, a timer or a score formula.
