Bloxorz: roll the block, stay on the platform, find the hole

Bloxorz is a 3D block-rolling logic puzzle created by Damien Clarke of DX Interactive, in which you tip a rectangular block across a platform with the arrow keys and try to drop it into a square hole without letting it roll off the edge. The block can stand upright or lie on its side, and some switches and tiles only react to one of those positions, so the way you roll matters as much as where you go. Across 33 levels the game adds three kinds of switches, fragile orange tiles and a switch that splits the block into two smaller cubes. Bloxorz began as a Flash game; the version embedded here runs through the Ruffle Flash emulator, which shows its own splash screen while it loads.

How to play Bloxorz

The rules fit in a sentence, but the geometry does not. A block that can stand on end or lie flat behaves differently on switches and fragile tiles, and the stages are built around that difference.

Start a new game
Click "Play Bloxorz" to load the game, wait for the Ruffle splash to finish, then choose Start New Game from the menu.

Roll with the arrow keys
Each press tips the block over one step in that direction, which can change it from standing to lying or back again.

Use the switches
Step on switches to operate parts of the level. Round switches work however you land on them; X-shaped switches need the block standing upright.

Reach the square hole
Roll the block onto the square hole to drop it in and clear the stage, without tipping it over the edge on the way.

What sets Bloxorz apart

Standing or lying matters

X-shaped switches only react to an upright block and orange tiles only give way under one, so you plan each stage around the block's position as well as its route.

Three switch types

Round "soft" switches trigger under any landing, X-shaped switches only when the block stands upright, and bracket-shaped switches teleport and split the block into two small cubes.

Fragile orange tiles

Orange tiles hold the block lying flat but give way if you stand it upright on one, so they force you to plan how you cross.

Passcodes instead of save files

Each stage shows a passcode in the top-right corner. Enter it through Load Stage to jump back to that level later.

Tips for Bloxorz

Write down each passcode. The code in the top-right corner is the only way to return to a stage without replaying the ones before it.
Plan backwards from the hole. Work out the last few rolls that reach the hole, then trace a route that arrives at their starting square.
Small cubes only press round switches. After a split, the two cubes are not heavy enough for X-shaped switches.
Never stand up on orange. Plan your crossing of fragile tiles so the block is lying flat on them.
Watch what each switch changes. Switches trigger a variety of actions in the level, so note what changes every time you press one.
