Battalion Commander 2: one commander, a snowfield and a squad to rebuild
Battalion Commander 2 is a 2D top-down arcade shooter by IriySoft in which you lead a lone commander up a snowy battlefield, shoot through enemy lines and free captured soldiers so they fight alongside you. Your commander follows the mouse cursor and fires automatically, so the whole game is about where you steer him: toward the cages holding prisoners, around enemy fire, and into crates and barrels that give up stars and coins when destroyed. Each run ends when your health is gone, and the stars and gold you collected pay for upgrades back at base. Battalion Commander 2 first appeared on Flash in February 2014; this HTML5 version arrived in December 2022.

How to play Battalion Commander 2
A run is a march up the screen. The meter on the right shows how far you have pushed, and the run stops when your health on the left runs out.

Press Start, then Play
The title screen's Start button drops you into the snowfield. On later runs you start from the base screen and press the orange Play button.

Steer with the cursor
Move the mouse and the commander walks toward it while firing at whatever comes down from the top of the screen.

Break the cages
Shoot open cages to free captured soldiers. Each freed soldier joins your squad and fights with the weapon he carries.

Spend your rewards
After the results screen, open Upgrades to spend gold on weapons and support for the commander and his squad, then start the next run.

Soldiers held in cages on the battlefield join you once freed. The results screen counts them separately as Allies Freed and Allies Gathered.

Tasks such as "Stab 15 enemy soldiers" (50 stars, 100 gold) or "Run 200 meters in one game" (60 stars, 125 gold) run alongside every attempt.
An upgrade tree tied to rank
The upgrade screen lays out rocket launchers, miniguns, sniper rifles, submachine guns and even a helicopter in columns, next to a ladder of military ranks you climb with XP.
Perk slots and an Endless Mode to unlock
The base screen shows four locked perk slots and a greyed-out Endless Mode button next to Play, so a new commander has more to open up after the first runs.
Tips for Battalion Commander 2
- Shoot the foot soldiers first. GamePix's advice is to clear individual soldiers before turning on bigger targets for larger rewards.
- Enemies you walk past still shoot. They keep firing until they leave the screen, so do not assume you are safe once you are beside them.
- Detour for cages. Every freed soldier adds firepower to the rest of the run.
- Read your three missions before a run. A task like running 200 meters in one game is worth 125 gold on its own.
- Shoot objects as well as soldiers. GamePix notes that destroyed objects drop stars and coins too, which adds up across a run.

Stars are experience: your commander starts as a Private with 0 of 100 stars toward the next rank. Gold buys upgrades. Completing any of the three active missions adds a fixed amount of both, and the base screen shows how many of the 48 missions you have finished. GamePix also notes that watching an ad can raise your rewards, but the game can be played without doing so.
