Hill Travel 3D: how high can your 4x4 get?

Hill Travel 3D is a 3D off-road driving game in which you choose an SUV, pickup or all-terrain vehicle and drive it as far up a mountain as it will go. The climb is split into 15 levels, and each has its own surface: grass, sand, mud, rock and snow each change how the car grips. The higher you go, the steeper the slope and the deeper the holes. The only race is against altitude: the HUD shows your current height in metres, your personal record and a world record, which stood at 4,302 m when we played. Golden stones on the route give you gold for new vehicles and tuning. It is the only climbing game in the Racing section of What Games Play; the rest are about lap times, traffic or combat.

How to play Hill Travel 3D

There are no rivals and no lap counter. Your target is a bigger number in the altitude box.

Pick a vehicle
The start screen opens on a yellow LADA Niva (80 hp, 4x4). The Jeeps tab also shows a Ford F-100, and four more models carry padlocks.

Tune it
The Tuning button next to Cars is where upgrades bought with gold go.

Start Climbing
Press the red Start Climbing button. Level 1, Plain at the foot, starts on grass at the base of the mountain.

Drive uphill and gather gold
Drive upward, run over golden stones for gold, and press R if the vehicle ends up on its roof or side.

What sets Hill Travel 3D apart

Altitude is the score

Current altitude, your record and the world record sit in the top-right corner, so every run is measured in metres climbed.

Five kinds of ground

Grass, sand, mud, rock and snow. GamePix says each level's surface changes how the car behaves.

Real-world 4x4s

The Jeeps tab alone lists the LADA Niva, Ford F-100, UAZ 469, UAZ Patriot, GMC K2500 and Toyota FJ Cruiser, and there are Trucks and Other tabs besides.

GamePix describes an on-screen steering wheel and buttons for mobile play, in place of the keyboard.

Tips for Hill Travel 3D

Collect the golden stones. They are the only source of gold, and GamePix says harder levels hold more of it.
Use R before you give up. Rolling over does not have to end a climb; R resets the vehicle's position.
Turn the camera on steep ground. Hold the left mouse button to look around a ridge before you drive at it.
Check Height record per car. Each vehicle card shows its own best height, which tells you which one climbs best for you.
Match power to terrain. The vehicle card lists horsepower and drive type, such as 80 hp and 4x4 on the Niva.
